Penang police have arrested two men, on Monday and Friday last week, for suspected involvement in Geng Ara, believed to be responsible for car theft, house break-ins and robberies in the region.
Supt Lai Fah Hin said, acting on information, police raided a car workshop in Butterworth at 6pm and detained a 39-year-old suspect.
“In a follow up operation, police detained a 33-year-old suspect on Friday, who was actually a neighbour of the first suspect in Sungai Ara.
“The men were ex-convicts, involved in car theft, house break-ins and robbery locally since last year,” he told reporters today.
He said both the suspects, who were unemployed, were involved in more than 10 crimes, the latest being on March 1 when they robbed a 43-year-old man in Sungai Batu, Teluk Kumbar.
“Both suspects, who rented a Kancil car, knocked into the car of the victim. Pretending to settle the issue amicably, they got out of the car to meet the victim. However, one of them pointed a fake pistol at the victim and fled with his belongings,” he said.
Lai said the suspects, who had not paid the rental for three months, used a false registration number for the Kancil car, to avoid being detected.
Following the arrest, police recovered a fake pistol, various electrical appliances, mobile phones and jewellery worth RM10,000.
“Police also recovered two Honda Civic cars stolen by the two suspects at a workshop in Bayan Lepas and Bayan Baru but the parts were dismantled and sold,” he said. – Bernama, March 14, 2016.
