This month, the goods and services tax (GST) came into force. If you think that this means cutting down on eating out, think again! The Malaysian Insider hunted down 30 cheap and good food spots around the Klang Valley and will reveal one for each day of the month of April.
Nestled within the busy morning market area of OUG along Old Klang Road is a shop that sells only “pan mee”, a Chinese noodle dish that can be served with soup or dry, with the standard accompaniments of fried anchovies, minced pork and shredded mushrooms.
J&E Little Kitchen started out as a stall operating from one of the nearby coffeeshops, but over time, the popularity of their “pan mee” enabled them to venture out on their own and into their very own shop. The coffeeshop is small, but spacious and airy, boasting even free wi-fi!
It’s not hard to see why the noodles here are so popular. Diners can choose from hand-pinched to thick or thin noodles, but whatever the version, the end-result is a slightly chewy but silky-smooth serving of home-made flour noodles. The soup broth here is the highlight of the dish – rich and flavourful, I liked that I didn’t feel thirsty after my meal, which is an easy indication that not too much artificial flavouring was used.
They’re extremely generous with the condiments at J&E, and my dining partner’s entire bowl of basic noodles (RM5.50) was piled high with minced pork, shredded mushrooms, crispy anchovies and lovely, leafy spinach. The bowl also came with a homemade fish ball. I was hungry, so added 3 fishballs and a poached egg (RM7.90 a bowl) to my order.
The flavours of all the condiments went perfectly together, especially with the homemade chilli sauce which gave our noodles a real kick! We’d highly recommend J&E Little Kitchen if you’re craving that perfect bowl of “pan mee”, just the kind that grandma used to make.
