Laman Grill is one of the classier western food joints in Shah Alam.If there is one popular cuisine in Shah Alam that keeps hungry patrons coming back for more, that would be western food. Be it steaks, chicken chops, or lamb racks, the people in Shah Alam are out in force every day gnawing through juicy cuts of meat and gravy.
Armed with our steak knives, forks, napkins and a voracious appetite, the HungryGoWhere team headed to the state's capital to seek out our favourite western fare. Here are Shah Alam's top must-visit western cuisine restaurants that will satisfy the carnivore in you!
Big Brother Restaurant & Grill
Opened since 2008, Big Brother Restaurant & Grill is firmly established in Shah Alam’s western dining scene. The interior is warmly welcoming with its dark wood furniture and orange-hued lighting.
There’s also an odd sense of nostalgia about the place, thanks to the wall posters of superstars such as Bruce Lee and Elvis Presley.
Big Brother’s menu is simple and straightforward: soups, pastas, meats, and drinks are the order of the day.
Big Brother Restaurant & Grill's Hawaiian chicken chop is topped with a slice of pineapple for extra zing.Prices are decent – our plate of Hawaiian chicken chop is RM18.90. It came with a huge whole thigh on mash, topped with a piece of grilled pineapple, and sides of coleslaw and leafy greens.
The seafood marinara spaghetti at RM21.90 came in a big portion, and with generous quantity of mussels, prawns, and squids. The marinara sauce was spot-on, with the right balance of flavours, made from fresh ingredients.
Laman Grill
By far, one of the classier restaurants in the area, Laman Grill is the brainchild of Chef Zubir Zain, of MasterChef Malaysia fame. By virtue of its fine-dining concept in both its decor and menu, prices are steeper here. With a visible kitchen in the restaurant, diners get to see how their meals are prepared.
The seafood pasta – Frutti De Mare (RM29.50) was well-executed and given a local twist. Served piping hot, the spaghetti was nicely coated with the zesty tomato sauce.
The squids, fish, Chilean blue mussels, tiger prawns, and clams were fresh and all these were tossed with fresh basil and chilli padi in the pasta. Yes, there was a fiery twist to this dish.
If you love lamb, Laman Grill’s lamb rack (RM49.50) is a good choice. The tender lamb cutlets were well-marinated and served with sweet roasted pumpkin, butter-poached potatoes, vegetables, and minted-rosemary jus.
In Laman Grill, you get to customise your steak experience by choosing the cut of beef and the accompanying sauce.
We requested for a 220g ribeye (RM45.50) to be cooked medium but unfortunately it came well-done. Well, they did re-cook another piece as replacement.
All steaks are served with potato cheese cake and Australian pear and romaine salad.
Why choose between chicken and beef when you can have both on the same plate at Polperro Steak House.Polperro Steak House
The crowds on any given evening here is a sure indication of Polperro Steak House’s popularity. Their very affordable pricing is one of the pulling factors. For example, their chicken chop is only RM9.90 and other meat dishes start at RM14.90.
The lamb chop black pepper at RM14.90 had three thin slices of lamb shoulder, baked beans, fries, coleslaw, and a piece of garlic bread. Although we did think the combination of sides to be quite odd, it could be their way of giving value-for-money servings.
Our chicken and beef grill (RM17.90) had the same side dishes, as well as a whole piece of chicken thigh and a thin slice of beef cooked well-done. All beef and lamb items here are cooked till well-done as a standard process.
Pasta dishes here start at RM8.90 and we just had to try their tiger prawn olio spaghetti. The portion and taste were average but for that price, it’s an economical choice.
