Moorthy's Mathai Indian rice, but just a few stalls away from Moorthy's sits the original Peter's Pork Noodle.
I usually go to Money's Corner to get my banana leaf rice fix atPeter Tay, the man behind the pork noodles, hails from Taiping. He came to Kuala Lumpur in 1978 to seek a better living and found it making pork noodles. After his partner retired about 16 years ago, Tay continued with the business, branded it Peter's Pork Noodle and the rest, you can say, is history.
The stall was originally located in the now-closed Restoran New Lay Sin (or Peking Hotel where Moorthy's Mathai Indian Rice also was), in Little India, but had moved to Money's Corner eight years ago.
These days, Tay has left much of the cooking and running of the stall to his trusted workers, although you'll still see him there sometimes.
There's another branch at Restoran One Sentral opposite YMCA run by his son, but my friends and I much prefer the original. The only thing I recall from the other stall was that the soup there was rather bland.
Money's Corner itself can be a little difficult to find. From Jalan Tun Sambanthan, just look for the Sports Toto shop. Next to it, there is a narrow passageway bordering an open carpark that will lead you to a “hidden” entrance to the food court.
There's also an alternative entrance at the back, directly opposite the Pos Malaysia office. If you see Legend's Claypot Briyani House, Money's Corner is just next to it.
Back to the pork noodles. My noodles of choice is kway teow (flat rice noodles) and I add a perfectly poached egg for that extra oomph (RM6.00 with egg, RM5.50 without, small)!
The noodles are thin and almost translucent which make for the softest, silkiest bite, while the egg adds a satin-like texture. I'm the kind of person who likes to break the yolk into the soup, but I know people who would slurp it up whole!
The best thing about the pork noodles is the delicious broth which os packed with porcine goodness. The soup is clear, and yields a clean taste with sweet-savoury flavours from the meat. I finish up every drop of that soup.
Apart from that, the thinly sliced pork and minced meat are cooked just right with a tender texture.
At the stall, the noodles are prepared en masse with rows of bowls ready to be filled with the delicious pork broth, but that doesn't change how tasty the end result is. Peter's Pork Noodle is definitely still as good as it has always been reputed to be, and is a definite must-try in my books! – December 31, 2015.
