The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded about 20 million Internet users in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said Facebook has more than 41% users, making it the most effective platform to promote products to targeted markets.
“Online buying and selling also increased where MDEC, one of the agencies under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, estimates RM40 million in revenue via the E-Rezeki and E-Usahawan programmes,” he said in reply to Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur (BN-Silam) who asked about online business fraud cases from 2008 to 2013.
Jailani said MCMC received 1,630 complaints on cybercrime, including online business from 2008 to 2013, and 391 complaints from January 2014 to February 2016.
Since the offences were under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 enforced by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, all complaints were referred to the latter for further action. – Bernama, March 9, 2016.
