The Pandan MP also said a majority of the people want outgoing Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz to replace Azeez as the new chairman of the pilgrims fund.

“The poll showed that Zeti's image is viewed highly by the people and most want her to be appointed chairman.

“I hope (prime minister) Datuk Seri Najib Razak will consider appointing Zeti the new Tabung Haji chairman after she ends her contract as central bank governor at the end of April.

“I am confident that appointing Zeti to replace Azeez will immediately revive the people's faith in Tabung Haji,” the PKR vice-president and secretary-general said in a statement today.

The random poll was conducted by Rafizi to gauge the people's opinions on who was more suitable for the job of Tabung Haji chairman to regain the people's confidence. He recently uploaded the poll, in both English and Bahasa Melayu, on Twitter.

Rafizi said he was informed that there was a high number of withdrawals from Tabung Haji by depositors who were worried about the management of the fund.

“Until now, the feedback from the government, including Najib, has yet to end the people's worries because questions remain unanswered.

“I will continue to bring up issues of several unprofitable Tabung Haji investments, which have also raised questions of political interference in the decision-making concerning huge investments by the fund.

“If Najib cannot handle the issue well, this matter will continue to persist and erode the people's confidence in Tabung Haji,” he said.

Rafizi said the people's support for Tabung Haji all this while had enabled the fund to record an annual average fund growth of 22.64% between 2009 and last year.

That was why the nett total of new deposits each year was almost twice the bonus announced.

“This explains why Tabung Haji does not have a cash flow problem to pay the announced bonuses, as each year it receives huge amounts of funds from the people.

“The growth in funds annually explains how the profits announced are higher each year, hitting RM3.53 billion last year, although the higher annual profits actually show that the percentage of returns each year have dwindled.

“That is why it is the priority to restore the people's confidence in Tabung Haji immediately so depositors will stop making withdrawals and the people can put their savings into the fund. The easiest way to do this is to replace the chairman with someone who is not a politician.” – February 18, 2016.
