Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's efforts to uplift the status of women in the country should be appreciated, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
Describing Najib as a respected leader, she said the prime minister had succeeded in lifting women's status to a prestigious level.
"I want to thank and express the highest appreciation for his leadership in uplifting the status of women in the country.
"He has also lifted the role of women by recognising the setting up of the Women Consultancy and Advisory Council to advise the government on the development and empowerment of women last year," she said in a statement today.
Rohani also praised Najib for his firm stand in wanting all public-listed companies to increase the number of women at the decision-making level.
"Such action should be taken by all companies to have at least 30% women at the decision-making level in the corporate sector," she said.
She said Najib also supported efforts to empower women and was responsive to women's voices, adding that he consistently worked with non-governmental organisations, society and the private sector to introduce and improve policies, strategies and programmes towards empowering women.
Apart from that, she said, the prime minister in his speech at the Meeting of World Leaders on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in New York last year had said the government would ensure women would have a role in every aspect of the country's development.
"Najib also said that when women succeed, everybody will also succeed." – Bernama, March 10, 2016.
