RM2.6 billion donation in his personal accounts.
Barisan Nasional Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should question the prime minister soon over theKhairy said the MACC must act independently and agreed that asking Datuk Seri Najib Razak for an explanation would give a clearer picture on the controversy.
"If there is a need to question the prime minister himself to assist in more thorough investigations, then it is proof that MACC is conducting its duty without fear or favour," he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the Barisan Nasional Youth at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
"All ongoing investigations must continue until a clear picture is obtained so that the investigation convinces people," said Khairy, who is also Umno Youth chief.
He said Najib's willingness to be questioned as part of MACC's investigations would also mean that there was nothing to hide.
The MACC yesterday announced that it had identified the Middle Eastern donor of the RM2.6 billion in Najib's personal accounts, but did not identify the person. The anti-graft agency added that it would be asking the prime minister to give an explanation of the donation.
Khairy two days ago said Najib, as Umno president, had not committed any crime by accepting the donation on behalf of the party.
"In Malaysia, there's no law to prohibit political parties from receiving contributions from supporters," Khairy was quoted as saying by news portal Malaysiakini.
Opposition politicians and civil society representatives, however, said that Najib had broken the law as the MACC Act defines donations and gifts as gratification, and any holder of public office should not receive such monies.
The act also states that any form of gratification is presumed to have been corruptly received, unless proven otherwise. – August 6, 2015.
