Kedah Umno today unanimously agreed that stern action must be taken against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir for violating the party's code of ethics by joining the opposition in its "Citizens' Declaration" move to call for the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, who is also the Kedah menteri besar, said this was because the former Umno deputy president and former Kedah menteri besar were still Umno members.
"We regret and are disappointed with their involvement in the 'Citizens' Declaration' as they are still Umno members and had clearly violated the code of ethics as stated in Umno's constitution.
"As a former Umno president and prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (who led the declaration) should have understood that its claims must be based on the principle of Parliamentary democracy, but he chose it (the declaration) with the aim of justifying his means," he said.
He told this to reporters after a closed-door meeting with state Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders at the menteri besar's official residence Seri Mentaloon today.
Ahmad Bashah said it was clear that the these leaders (who came up with the declaration) did not respect the voters who had given BN the mandate to lead the nation after the 13th general election (GE13).
He said despite the many crises recently, Kedah Umno members had sworn to remain loyal to Najib.
"We will stand with the party president to face the coming GE14. The liaison body also urges the president to continue focusing on national development to revive the economy and on national security which are priorities now.
"To ensure these are achieved, the party machinery will be strengthened at all levels to face the challenges from within the party or outside it, and will not bow (to anyone) or retreat in the fight against its enemies," he said.
Also present were Kedah Umno deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and its secretary Datuk Rozai Shafian. – Bernama, March 6, 2016.
