Malaysia's anti-graft authorities want a review of Attorney-General Tan Sri Apandi Ali's decision to close investigations into the RM2.6 billion found in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal bank accounts.
The anti-graft agency said its highest management had met today and decided that it would present the case investigation papers to a panel and seek a review of the case while another special panel would be set up.
The operations review panel is an independent body set up by the government to monitor the operations of MACC according to the MACC Act 2009.
It also gives its views concerning cases that are not taken to court for prosecution by the public prosecutor.
Members of the panel are Tan Sri Dr Hamid Bugo, who is the chairman; former Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (Isis) chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Jawhar Hassan, former Bank Negara deputy governor Datuk Zamani Abdul Ghani; former deputy auditor-general Datuk Azizah Arshad; former Public Complaints Bureau director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Wahab Abdullah; Mara Accounting Research Institute director Professor Dr Normah Omar, criminologist Dr P. Sundramoorthy; and former Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee.
Apandi announced yesterday that Najib was cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, after close to six months of investigations into the RM2.6 billion channelled into the prime minister’s bank accounts and into Finance Ministry-owned firm, SRC International Sdn Bhd.
He also said Najib had returned US$620 million, out of the US$681 million (RM2.6 billion) given, in August 2013. He ordered MACC to close the case against the prime minister. – January 27, 2016.
