Malaysia Chronicle's instructions on how to navigate a website block which has been in place since noon yesterday. – Facebook screenshot, October 24, 2015.A Malaysia Chronicle editor confirmed that the news aggregator website was blocked yesterday, ahead of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's Budget 2016 speech.
The website's address at www.malaysia-chronicle.com returns a page with the notice: "This website is not available in Malaysia as it violates the national law(s)".
Wong Choon Mei confirmed the block which had started around noon yesterday.
She declined to further comment on the move as the team had not heard anything from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Malaysia Chronicle today also posted on Facebook to inform readers how to get around the website block.
Their Facebook page shows step-by-step instructions to adjust the local domain name servers (DNS), which is expected to enable access to the website.
The Malaysian Insider is working to get a response from MCMC and the ministry on reasons for the block against Malaysia Chronicle.
MCMC in July blocked access in Malaysia to UK-based whistle-blower website Sarawak Report, on grounds that its articles on controversial state-owned investment fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd were a threat to national order and security.
Sarawak Report remains blocked but can be accessed through virtual private networks. – October 24, 2015.
