After all, he said, it was not the first time the former Umno president had left the party.

"This is the second time... so, it is really up to him," he told reporters after presenting land titles to 259 settlers in Felda Raja Alias 3 today.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir announced that he would leave Umno with immediate effect.

Negri Sembilan Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said Dr Mahathir's decision did not come as a surprise since the former prime minister had every right to do so.

"Nevertheless, while we are preparing for the next general election, it is better for us to stay united instead of fighting each other.

"We don't want to have a 'gunting dalam lipatan' or a wolf in sheep's clothing among us that can weaken us.

"A split is normal in any party but I think in Umno, it will not go to the extent of jeopardising the party like what happened before, repeating history because we have learnt from our experience," he told Bernama when contacted. – Bernama, March 1, 2016.
