No one has forgotten what former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad did to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when the latter was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998, but it is vital to move on for the sake of the country, says PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.
Star Online reported the Selangor menteri besar as saying that the “reconciliation”, which saw Dr Mahathir join forces with opposition leaders and civil society leaders to oust Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, “was good for the country”.
“What happened in 1998 I certainly cannot forget. Nobody forgets the history. It is for us to learn the lesson.
“But we need to move forward and I think it is time for us to move on,'” he was quoted as saying by the portal.
On Friday, Dr Mahathir led more than 50 individuals to sign Citizens’ Declaration, which called for Najib’s removal and some reforms to institutions, such as moves to restore integrity to “undermined institutions” such as the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Public Accounts Committee.
Azmin said that more meetings would be held with all leaders who had signed the declaration, to discuss the next course of action.
“We have to go down and explain to the rakyat for them to understand the issues.
“We will continue to engage and make sure whatever we have committed in the resolution must be executed as soon as possible,” he was quoted as saying.
He said the backlash from Umno leaders towards Dr Mahathir for championing the cause was normal, as leaders from the country’s largest Malay party could not accept the fact that they would not be able to remain in power after a major reform took place in Malaysia.
He also said there was nothing personal in the collaboration between him and Dr Mahathir, as it was about saving Malaysia.
“I served as senior Umno leader for 13 years, of course, I have close and personal relationship with Dr Mahathir for many years.
“We were there as the citizens of Malaysia representing different political parties, ideologies and different civil societies, in the interests of the nation and also the people.
“It is not about personal choice, to me it is a matter of principle.” – March 6, 2016.
