Crowd-sourced comic book ‘reinvents the princess myth’
What started as a project to turn internet music sensation Jonathan Coulton's music into a graphic novel has evolved into "The Princess Who Saved Herself," a children's book that offers a modern take on the princess story.
Greg Pak, a well-known comic book writer behind the feature film "Robot Stories" and comics such as "Storm" and "Batman/Superman," is working on the new children's book along with the Japanese-Canadian artist Takeshi Miyazawa (who co-created the Marvel character Amadeus Cho with Pak) and American singer-songwriter Coulton.
The resulting book, according to their Kickstarter page, "reinvents the princess myth for a new generation of proactive girls."
The team has a history of Kickstarter success: their 2013 campaign to turn some of Coulter's songs into a graphic novel took $340,270 (RM1.3 million) on an initial goal of $39,000, leading them to offer their backers a digital version of "The Princess Who Saved Herself" as a thank you. The next step: to produce a hard copy.
"The Princess Who Saved Herself" is based on another of Coulton's songs, telling the story of "an awesome kid who lives with her pet snake and plays rock 'n' roll all day to the huge annoyance of the classical guitarist witch who lives down the road. Hijinks, conflicts, and a fun reconciliation ensue, all showcasing determination, bravery, and understanding."
Indonesian comic book colourist Jessica Kholinne ("X-Treme X-Men") and comic book letterer Simon Bowland (Marvel, Dynamite) also contributed to the book.
The new campaign started with a goal of $15,000 (as it's already been written, drawn, coloured and lettered, they just need to cover printing costs) and had hit more than $22,000 after the first day of a 15-day campaign.
Pledges of $20 or more will get backers a hard copy plus the pdf version, with shipping planned for June. — AFP/Relaxnews, March 13, 2015.
