‘Great Expectations,’ ‘The Scarlet Letter’ getting manga editions
An ongoing project to adapt classic literature to manga is readying its next round of titles: Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," Jane Austen's "Emma" and Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter."
Udon Entertainment and Morpheus Publishing's Manga Classics collection started with editions of "Pride and Prejudice" and "Les Miserables," both of which came out last year.
While intended primarily for a young adult audience, the books are also, the company hopes, a way for adults to rediscover the classics.
"Pride and Prejudice" was voted a finalist last year for Best Graphic Novels & Comics among the online reading community Goodreads, suggested its ability to reach a wider audience.
In the US, the manga industry is relatively small but growing, with several publishers making inroads and digital distribution sites like ComiXology and Scribd helping to spur the trend.
Manga Classics are available via ComiXology and from bookstores around the world. "The Scarlet Letter" is out this month, followed by "Great Expectations" in April and "Emma" in May. — AFP/Relaxnews, March 9, 2015.
