‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’ passes 200,000 sales in one week

The fourth book in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series is flying off the shelves in the US and will debut at the top of the New York Times best-seller list.

Despite being the first book in the series not penned by Larsson himself, the novel has racked up phenomenal hardcover and eBook sales even though it has only been available for seven days in America.

"The response from readers has been beyond what we'd anticipated and speaks to the connection readers have to this series," said Sonny Mehta, chairman and editor-in-chief of Alfred A. Knopf.

"Lisbeth Salander is one of the most compelling heroines of 21st century crime literature and I am thrilled to see readers have welcomed her return."

To date, the series has sold over 80 million books and has spawned several films and TV adaptations, turning its creator, Stieg Larsson into a global publishing phenomenon. Unfortunately Larsson – who had planned a seven-book series, died of a heart attack in 2004 before work could be completed on the fourth book.

Instead the baton was picked up – with the blessing of Larsson's estate – by fellow Swedish writer David Lagercrantz.

"The Girl in the Spider's Web" is his first continuation novel and was published in Europe on August 27 and went on sale in the US on September 1. – AFP/Relaxnews, September 11, 2015.
