Google is testing its self-driving cars in Austin, Texas. – Reuters pic, September 1, 2015.Google is taking its self-driving cars outside of Silicon Valley for the first time, reports The Verge. The tiny vehicles are now being tested in Austin, Texas.
While Texas does not currently have legislation on autonomous vehicles – unlike Nevada, Florida, Michigan and California – Google worked with Austin's local government to test-drive the Lexuses this summer. A new round of testing is set to begin in the next few weeks.
The vehicles will come equipped with a removable steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals in case of emergency. However, since July, the self-driving cars have only experienced 15 minor accidents in 1.8 million miles of driving.
