Korean cars racing ahead on quality

The JD Power 2015 US Quality Study published yesterday, shows that the gap between Korean brands and the rest of the US car market has never been wider.

More startling is the fact that Japanese marques, once the global benchmark for automotive quality and reliability, have collectively fallen below the entire industry quality average for the first time in 29 years.

The study bases its scores on how many problems an owner experiences with a new car during the first 90 days and the number of problems per 100 vehicles – PP100.  The lower the score, the higher the quality.

This year's industry average is 112PP100, two points better than for Japanese brands (114 PP100), which are now on a par with US manufacturers.

But it is Korean brands, with an average of 90PP100 that is remarkable, an 11-point lead over the best of the rest of the industry.

This is a clear shift in the quality landscape," said Renee Stephens, vice-president of US automotive quality at JD Power. "For so long, Japanese brands have been viewed by many as the gold standard in vehicle quality." – AFP, June 18, 2015.
