After first hinting about the line last summer, the Vermont-based ice cream maker unveiled the new flavours, creating non-dairy versions of their classic Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chunky Monkey, and launching newbies PB & Cookies and Coffee Caramel Fudge.

The certified vegan flavours are made with a base of almond milk.

The collection has been hailed as a victory by lactose-intolerant consumers and vegans, who have been asking the brand for years to create alternatives.

Last year, an online petition created on Change.org garnered more than 28,400 signatures.

The petition applauded the company for its support of gay marriage rights, fair trade policies, sustainability record and commitment to improving animal welfare. But there’s always room for improvement, said Jenny Foy and Doug Reed of Charlottesville, Virginia in their petition.

“Given all that, we are surprised that a company as ethical as Ben & Jerry’s does not make a non-dairy ice cream.”

Offering an ice cream for their vegan customers would signal the company’s support for cutting back on animal products, it continues.

“Moreover, offering a non-animal product line of ice cream would signal to their customers that such alternatives can be mainstream and don't mean sacrificing great flavour and their favourite brands, and that they don't have to be vegan to enjoy them.”

Ben & Jerry’s may be one of the biggest ice cream brands to launch vegan-friendly frozen treats, but they’re not the first.

So Delicious has a line of cashew milk-based frozen desserts, while Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss is made with organic coconut milk and sweetened with agave.

The Ben & Jerry's vegan pints hit US grocery stores this month for US$5.69 (RM23.36) a pint. – AFP, February 4, 2016.
