New Twenty-Twenty

Hidden away but frequently patronised by the humble blue collar workers in Pandan Indah, the bustling New Twenty-Twenty (2020) has a fierce kopitiam rivalry with the adjacent Nine Eight Nine Eight (9898.) As well as some of the hidden gem Chinese restaurants in Cheras.

New Twenty-Twenty does have a stunning representation of Sarawak cuisine here that is well-received by the locals, porky plates of mee kolo and soupy bowls of Sarawak laksa. Also for those who abstain from the carnivorous tendencies, there are numerous economic options over at the vegetarian mixed rice stall. For those watching their waistline, a meal from here every now and then can only help, with their healthy, crunchy, guilt-free choices.

The tai chow stall here also has a good selection, and is suitable for those that just want the simple tastes of good home-cooking. For the stern auntie experience, then order a plate of our favourite wantan mee, a staple at this kopitiam, manned by a no-nonsense-looking lady.

If you ever get lonely or want to grab a bite in the evening, then remember that it’s open till fairly late, roughly around 10pm, and is usually lively throughout.

O&S Restaurant

A mainstay of PJ folks, it is almost a given that O&S Restaurant will have you sharing a table with strangers unless you want to chance waiting them out. Quite a risk, when you consider the mob that is attracted by the vast variety of stalls here. In fact, it’s so well-liked that the kopitiam located behind them, with almost as many varieties to boot, get almost no spillover crowds on a regular basis.

Once seated, try and get a bowl or plate of the char kway teow, Penang-style chee cheong fun, prawn noodles, pork ball noodles, chicken rice, or yong tau foo if you can. The locals recommended our order of pork ball noodles to great effect, and we like to say that this is one of the best place to get Penang hawker food!

Lai Foong

Step back in time when you walk into Lai Foong, as this place and its wonderful food hasn't changed much since it opened its doors in 1956. The easily recognised art-deco building in the middle of the city stands as a testament against time of the food’s success, albeit a little yellowed with age around the edges. It’s easy to get to as well, just jump on the Kelana Jaya line and get off at Pasar Seni LRT station.

With a hearty broth thickened by hours of boiling, the beef was so tender it melted in our mouths! A sprinkling of preserved vegetables and coriander added sour and fresh flavours to the savoury broth.

The chicken rice is also highly sought after here, stringing in line after line of hungry office workers at its popular second stall position. It makes for great people-watching if you like to old-man around with a slice of hot toast with butter and kaya, remember to dip it into a serving of half-boiled egg and soya sauce to complete the experience.
