Fine-dining Indian restaurant Gaggan is Asia’s best restaurant again
Bangkok’s fine dining Indian restaurant, Gaggan, retained its top spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list as revealed at the awards ceremony at the W Hotel in Thailand's capital city last night.
Gaggan was followed by Narisawa in Tokyo, Japan, Restaurant Andre in Singapore and Amber in Hong Kong, China, all winning best restaurant in their respective countries.
At his eponymous restaurant, Kolkata-born Gaggan Anand puts his hometown’s cuisine in the spotlight, reinterpreting traditional Indian cuisine with modern cooking techniques. The result is a daring and delicious fusion, updating India’s culinary legacy with inventive flair.
Bangkok’s Nahm, Issaya Siamese Club and Eat Me were also listed at eight, 19th and 23rd place respectively.
The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants List is voted by The Diners Club Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, a group of over 300 leaders in the restaurant industry.
They include food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded “foodies” encompassing different regions in Asia from India and the subcontinent to the mainland (China and Korea) to Southeast Asia.
In its fourth edition, 2016’s list features more restaurants than ever before with 10 new and diverse entries.
Newcomer Mingles in Seoul, South Korea, comes in at 15th place, earning the restaurant both the highest new entry award and the best restaurant in Korea.
Helmed by chef Mingoo Kang, Mingles combines Korean cuisine with Western cooking techniques to produce an inventive and adventurous menu.
Also new on the list is Singapore’s Corner House and Wild Rocket; Japan’s La Maison De La Nature Goh, Den and Kikunoi; Manila’s Gallery Vask; Taipei’s Raw; Hong Kong’s Ta Vie and Indonesia’s Locavore.
