The last time those yearnings surfaced, we decided to check out old-timer Restoran Win Heng Seng in Jalan Imbi.

Even with new signboards and a newer seating area next door, the stained and faded tiles of the original kopitiam showed signs of age, lending to its old-school charm.

As it's a short walk away from Bukit Bintang, the coffee shop is a popular stop for breakfast and lunch. If you want to avoid the crowd, 11am is the best time to go.

The pork noodles at this coffee shop are well-known, and the busy stall is hard to miss even though it's located at the very back of the coffee shop.

Our order of the dry pork noodles was a simple affair of kway teow with a generous topping of minced pork, garnished with spring onions. The real star of this dish was the delicious minced pork.

With just the right proportion of fat to lean meat, the pork was incredibly tender and juicy. After giving the bowl a mix and toss, all the components balanced out beautifully and we got soft, chewy kway teow and a burst of savoury flavour from the meat in every mouthful.

I skipped the sausage and went for the meat balls which were firm, springy and really tasty. The soup, however, was too salty and heavily flavoured with MSG.

At RM8 a bowl, we thought it was expensive considering the portions. That said, it was a very tasty bowl of pork noodles and definitely worth a try.

But it also fulfilled the one criteria for good char kway teow: lots of wok hei (heat from the wok).

Full of smoky flavour and flecked with bits of burnt char, it was absolutely fantastic. The noodles themselves were wide and thin, making for a very smooth texture and soft bite. The only problem was that the serving was too small! We wiped the plate clean in about a minute and were left craving more.

Well, that just means we have to come back to try their mini egg tarts! – October 29, 2015.
