So we were really pleased to discover Bakeology in Petaling Jaya, a bakery and cafe that makes its own breads, pastries, cookies and cakes using quality ingredients that give their cakes, cookies and breads a real boost.

The breads are mostly sourdough-based, and the loveliest bread here for me is the Beetroot and Thyme Bread (RM13 a loaf). It can be eaten as is, or you could slather a slice with French butter; either way, you’lld find yourself wanting more of the bread. There is a tinge of salty and sweetness, and the scent of thyme is simply addictive. We have had this with smoked salmon and fried egg at home and enjoyed it.

There is the usual cafe fare at Bakeology and we were pleasantly surprised when we ordered Pasta with Rosemary Chicken (RM16) and found the al dente spaghetti tossed in a fragrant, nutty pesto sauce. The rosemary-infused roast chicken thigh impressed too with its crispy skin and flavourful, juicy meat.

The Spinach and Mushroom Pie (RM9) here is definitely worth coming back for. The crust is crumbly and buttery and it’s generously filled with delicious spinach and button mushrooms. The Chicken Pot Pie (RM9) tasted ordinary by comparison, but if you’re still set on some meat in your meal, there is also a Lamb Pie (RM9) with chunky, spicy masala lamb inside that’s rather nice too.

As for desserts, there are cakes like I Loove Salted Caramel (RM11 a slice, RM63 for a 6-inch cake), Hokey Pokey, a dark chocolate cake with kahlua in it (RM12 a slice and RM70 a cake) and more.

We had a Creme Brulee (RM9), which was smooth, soft and creamy and quite exquisite in its light sweetness and delicate vanilla bean flavour.

The shortbread with pistachios is absolutely delightful, buttery and crumbling at the bite. Recently Caryn, who with her sister Cheryl, bakes and runs the cafe, offered me a macadamia shortbread (RM16 for a small box) and I was sold! I can’t think of more suitable gifts for Chinese New Year, or something to enjoy with my coffee.

Bakeology offers a breakfast set of English Muffin Sandwich, or two D’Earl & Butter Blossom Scones, with black coffee or tea at RM10. There is a lunch set with pasta, sandwiches and pies and a beverage, from RM15 to RM20.
