Keeping it simple at Anuar’s Fish Head Curry

Our fish head was already considered small but it was more than enough to feed three or four so bring friends! – The Malaysian Insider pic by Yap Pik Kuan, November 6, 2015.Our fish head was already considered small but it was more than enough to feed three or four so bring friends! – The Malaysian Insider pic by Yap Pik Kuan, November 6, 2015.Anuar's Fish Head Curry is a humble, back-to-basics stall on the corner of Lorong Ara Kiri 3 just behind the TMC supermarket in Lucky Garden, Bangsar.

It's easy to spot from afar that this is no ordinary food stall, going by the perpetual crowd milling around.

Anuar's keeps their food selection trim and uncomplicated – a giant vat of fish head curry, a mountain of deep-fried crispy chicken, fried kembong fish, and spiced squid, are just about all that is available to diners.

But what they lose out in terms of variety, they more than make up in taste.

The main star at Anuar's, as their name suggests, is the curry fish head.

For a group of four, we got the smallest tenggiri (mackerel) head (RM20) they could find. Its snow white flesh peeled off easily and was incredibly smooth and sweet.  The buttery flesh quite literally melted away in our mouths!

While it was delightfully thick, it tasted "flat" and could have been simply perfect with slightly more time on the stove to allow the flavours of all the aromatic spices to really infuse into the gravy.

We were lucky enough to get a fresh batch of fried chicken on our recent visit and boy was it good. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Yap Pik Kuan, November 6, 2015.We were lucky enough to get a fresh batch of fried chicken on our recent visit and boy was it good. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Yap Pik Kuan, November 6, 2015.One dish that we could all agree was lipsmackingly good was the humble fried chicken. It's fried up in batches so if you're lucky, you might just get freshly fried chicken hot off the wok.

The meat was incredibly tender and juicy, bursting with savoury flavours from the fragrant spices which formed a delightful golden brown crisp on the outside. At only RM2.50, it was an absolute winner in our books!

Another must-try at the stall is the sotong (RM5). The squid itself was very fresh with a springy texture, made even better by the fragrant, mildly spicy curry paste it was cooked in.

Coated with a mildly spicy curry paste, the freshness of the sotong stood out. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Yap Pik Kuan, November 6, 2015.Coated with a mildly spicy curry paste, the freshness of the sotong stood out. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Yap Pik Kuan, November 6, 2015.If the curry fish head proves too big for you, you can opt for the smaller fried kembung (RM2.50) instead.

The fish itself is coated in a light, crisp batter with a little kick from the rempah (spices). It wasn't very fleshy and we reckon one person could polish it off easily.

We found our meal very satisfying and enjoyable despite sweating it out under the zinc roofing.

With good food at even better prices, it's easy to see why crowds throng the corner stall during lunchtime, digging into their rice with gusto. – November 6, 2015.
