KL’s 10 best restaurants for sushi
Malaysians are big time Japanese food lovers, period. But above all, we are also a fickle lot when it comes to Japanese cuisine and sushi in particular – constantly moving from one joint to another, pondering over the best restaurants in town that will provide the best quality and price ratio.
Then again, who doesn't? We have meticulously searched high and low to come up with a list of the top sushi restaurants in the city. Keep this HungryGoWhere guide when the gnawing call for sushi is too strong to ignore!
Ichiban Boshi
A Singapore-based contemporary Japanese restaurant that made it on the must-visit list is none other than Ichiban Boshi. Eat your heart out with various sushi types on offer here – nigiri, temaki, makimono, gunkan – totalling over 100 sushi plates available. And who could forget the conveyor belt snaking around the restaurant serving colour-coded sushi plates (prices range from RM2.30 to RM11.70).
Matsuya
The spotlight on Japanese restaurants in Bangsar is now firmly trained on Matsuya, and being located on Jalan Telawi 2 with maximum exposure to Bangsar nightlife doesn't hurt either. Due to its increasing popularity, you're best advised to reserve in advance otherwise you might just end up missing out on their excellent Japanese cuisine.
Salmon lovers, you should start off with their salmon ikura cheese maki sushi (RM25) – slivers of freshly seared salmon draped over the sushi rice with melted cheese on top. You shouldn't leave Matsuya without tasting their signature sushi – Matsu maki (RM25), consisting of deep-fried prawn maki with avocado, mayo, and plenty of roe.
To accompany your sushi choices, go for the delicious uni tofu and their ultra smooth chawanmushi.
Kirishima
Kirishima has become one of our favourite go-to spots for reasonably priced Japanese cuisine. While it doesn't immediately grab your attention with its interior or awe-inspiring sake menu, you will sit up and take notice of the price to quality ratio, which is among the most best we've come across this year.
Kirishima's special baked eel sushi roll – also known as the Volcano roll – stood out prominently among their special sushi menu largely in part of its six pieces for RM38 price, and its deliciousness factor. Another must-order item is their 7kan nigiri sushi (RM58) a top-notch sampler featuring seven favourite sushis including salmon, tuna, and butterfish.
Okonomi
“What’s your roll?” You can decide entirely for yourself at Okonomi’s make-your-own-sushi joint! With 40 different fillings, 16 types of toppings, and 20 sauces, the possibilities are endless!
First, you are given a choice of either white or brown rice as a base, wrapped in seaweed or soy, then you get to pick how big you want it – we obviously chose large (RM19.90 for five fillings), but you can also get your rolls in medium (four fillings, RM16.90) or small (three fillings, RM13.90).
We went for a fruity seafood roll comprising of avocado, strawberry, scallops, and softshell crab, topped with some oozing mentaiko! Pre-made house rolls will cost anywhere from RM15.90 to RM20.90, but don’t forget to leave room for Okonomi’s amazing parfaits (RM16.90) or their matcha lava cake (RM16.90)!
Kame Sushi
In contrast to Okonomi, Kame Sushi is all about omakase – leaving your dinner entirely up to the chef! Sushi Kame is extremely popular with both locals and expatriate Japanese diners, so it’s very important to make your reservation beforehand.
An eight-course meal at Sushi Kame costs RM150 and will include appetisers, sashimi, soup, tea, and of course, sushi! An assortment of sushi will be handmade by the chef right before your eyes (maybe even by Chef Kame himself), with tuna, shrimp, salmon, and eel freshly flown in from Japan twice a week! Kame Sushi is the best place to get your authentic Japanese sushi on without going to Japan itself – Desa Sri Hartamas is close enough!
