Nostalgic dining this Merdeka at Coliseum Cafe

It stands out in the bustle of Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, recognisable by the iconic wood and glass façade of the café.

Old furniture and memorabilia inside bring you back to colonial times, especially the bar which remains pretty much unchanged.

The café looks brighter and more spacious now through a facelift a few years ago, but it is basically the same, comforting place it was years ago.

Sizzling steaks are still the house speciality, though grilled steaks are also available.

You can have a Grilled Premium Wagyu Beef (RM130) now, Braised Lamb Shank (RM57) and Prime Gourmet Grilled Burgers (RM21.90), in a nod to modern times.

However, classic staples like Chicken Maryland (RM26.90) and Chicken Ala King (RM24.90) are evergreen favourites on the menu, as well as Baked Crabmeat (RM22.90) which has been popular throughout the café’s existence.

A daily breakfast of eggs and kaya toast is served, as well as the Colonial Fried Sandwich with chicken and mushrooms (RM9.90).

For the Merdeka month week days, the café has a special set lunch with Pan Seared John Snapper (RM24.90) and Grilled Lamb Rack Shoulder (RM29.90) which come with the entrée of the day and a drink.

For dessert, we highly recommend the Caramel Custard, Apple Pie or Banana Fritters with ice-cream, and the Chocolate Lava.

If you're looking for a bit of nostalgia to go with your meal, the Coliseum Café is the way to go.

If you'd like to have that meal in more modern comfort, they have also opened branches at Plaza 33 in PJ, at The Gardens, Mid Valley and at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. – August 28, 2015.
