Romantic Ampang cafes and restaurants for a night out
Ampang is a historic town known for being an ambassadorial district of Kuala Lumpur, lending it a flair of international flavours with many impressive wine-and-dine options.
So expand your dating grounds with something for the adventurous outdoorsmen, the hipster baristas, the quiet romantics and gourmet foodies with HungryGoWhere’s Ampang date guide.
Typica Cafe No. 2
Typica Cafe No. 2 is the atypical coffee date. Map this, bring cash and speak Mandarin/Cantonese, or bring someone who knows the language. Then, begin the hunt for Typica's small green license plate and call the number on the sign if the red and white gate is locked.
The ever-changing coffee menu, homemade cakes (RM13+) and intensive brewing process would impress the average visitor. Luckily, the couple running this outfit will patiently guide you both through the different beans, coaxing you into using all five senses, as you experience your shared cup of whole beans entirely to fruition as a steaming glass.
We recommend the syphon-style Ethiopian coffee (RM30) which has a complex, woody, and whole-bodied flavour which changes as the temperature drops steadily.
There are few things more sensual than two people experiencing the creation of a hot glass of coffee. Whether you both end up in a fit of giggles over how serious this coffee business is, or staring into each others eyes, you are welcome to linger as the coffee cools.
Saga Highland Steak House
Saga Hill is home to easy hiking trails, Apeh Waterfall and Saga Highland Steakhouse. Outdoor enthusiasts and photographers may find this their new favourite dinner spot after a hike to the hidden waterfall.
Parking is aplenty, and the swaying wicker lamps barely frame the immaculate view of palms and the KL skyline. But make no mistake, this place is a no-frills joint with cheerful yellow plastic tables and mismatched chairs. Don’t dress up for this one.
There is the Village Mix Grill (RM35.80) for the indecisive, an array of tender, delicately-flavoured beef, chicken and lamb with your choice of sauces, fries, and tart coleslaw as sides.
The menu also features Argentinian or Australian beef steaks, exotic Ostrich steaks and an array of seafood including seasonal crab dishes (RM45/kg).
The seafood carbonara (RM18.80) is a quick serving for hungry mouths, checkered with mushrooms, prawn, mussels and imitation crab meat. Perfect for reenacting the spaghetti scene in Disney’s Lady & The Tramp without the awkward nosing of the meatballs. Wash this all down with a jumbo Saga juice (RM14.80) Made for sharing, it comes with two straws.
La Risata
La Risata is an elegant Italian cuisine with an extensive wine list. This rustic trattoria named “the laughter” is tucked away from the main road. The Italian culture is stylish, steeped in gastronomy, and can rival even the French in their amorous tendencies, making La Risata (they also have an outlet in Damansara) the perfect lunch or dinner date for the foodie who craves a taste of Italy with a hearty appetite.
Apart from the main dining area, is a screened-off quiet area for romanticists to enjoy together, and upstairs waits a cosy lounge, with sofas to sink into with a special someone.
Their monthly specials are usually popular among the guests, who usually call in a reservation to ensure their spot for the night.
If you choose to pass on the specials, their famous wood-fired pizzas are perfect for sharing. Enjoy the pizza pera e gorgonzola (RM30) which consists of sweet pear shavings, bitter rocket, smoky, sharp gorgonzola, savoury mozzarella, and walnut. For the carnivores though, comes the aptly named pizza carnivoro (RM38,) a sturdy charcuterie atop it’s flaky crust.
Pair your meal off with a dry, tannic glass of 2009 Lamole di Lamole Chianti from Frescobaldi (RM37) and call it a night by splitting dessert with your date, maybe the famed silky custard with caramel sauce – Panna Cotta (RM12).
These are just three of our 10 Romantic Ampang Cafes & Restaurants for Dates, so spruce up your repertoire with options like a live jazz bistro, a retro burger joint, or the vegetarian alternative!
