Satisfying those late-night nasi lemak cravings in Taman Seputeh
I was recently introduced to a nondescript stall called Kembara Corner in Seputeh which dishes up fresh and fragrant nasi lemak on banana leaves.
Located on the same road as popular seafood restaurant, Siu Siu, and shiny new event space, Glasshouse, this under-the-radar eatery still sees a healthy crowd and has become one of my new favourite supper spots.
A basic plate of nasi lemak is an affordable RM2. With a piece of fried chicken, that will only set you back RM5.
There are also other choices available like fried fish, ayam sambal, curry chicken and paru.
Dishes are limited but that helps keeps things simple as the real stars of the show were the rice and sambal, which to me, are the heart and soul of a nasi lemak.
While some places tend to give you hard and clumpy rice, Kembara Corner makes it fluffy and fragrant with santan and traces of lemongrass.
It was second best to my all-time favourite in San Peng, downtown Kuala Lumpur.
The sambal was on the runny side, pooling around the rice like lava. You taste the sweetness first, before the heat hits you. A little bit of telur masin cut through the spiciness perfectly.
I've tried both the ayam goreng and ayam sambal, both of which were nicely seasoned and tender. While the former was fried to a golden crisp, the latter was reminiscent of an ayam masak merah, more savoury than spicy. Either way, they're delicious add-ons to your nasi lemak.
The stall also serves a variety of soups. They had run out of oxtail on my most recent visit so we opted for the sup daging (RM5).
While the broth was clear, the soup was full of depth and packed with hearty bovine flavours.
Fried shallots made every spoonful all the more aromatic while chopped spring onions provided a fresh zing.
Every bowl is served with a tub of chilli which you can add to adjust the level of spiciness to your liking. The soup is delicious both slurped up as is or soaked up with fluffy roti bakar.
Kembara Corner also houses a Ramly burger stand and let me tell you, you're not going to be able to resist the heavenly smells wafting off the grill. – February 22, 2016.
