Subway to switch to antibiotic-free chicken
Subway has announced plans to serve antibiotic-free chicken across its US restaurants by 2016.
After announcing plans in June to remove all artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from their sandwiches, salads, soups and cookies in North America by 2017, the chain has followed up with news that the chicken served across its 27,000 outlets in the US will also be free of antibiotics.
The chain will do the same for its turkey beginning in 2016. The full transition for antibiotic-free turkey will be complete within two to three years.
The full transition for pork and beef is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
The move comes after Subway was one of a handful of fast food chains including Burger King, KFC, Starbucks and Pizza Hut to get a failing grade for its antibiotic meat policy.
In the wide-sweeping report, written jointly by a group of consumer, health and environmental groups for Friends of the Earth, analysts pointed a stern finger at Subway, charging that brands which market themselves as healthier options have a particular responsibility to live up to that image. – AFP/Relaxnews, October 22, 2015.
