Bank Negara made recommendation on successor, says Zeti
The outgoing Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz says the bank's board has made a recommendation on her successor.
She said Putrajaya would decide and submit the name to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"We have made the recommendation and the government will make the decision and submit the name to the Agong," Zeti told reporters on the sidelines of the Wharton Global Forum 2016 in Kuala Lumpur today.
"Just be patient. (It will be announced) very soon," she said when asked who would be her preferred choice between Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, and Datuk Mohamed Ibrahim, the current deputy governor.
Besides the two, the list of potential candidates includes Malaysian Ambassador to the US Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah and deputy Bank Negara governor Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus.
Zeti was also asked whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also finance minister, was at Bank Negara yesterday.
"Yes, there was a briefing, we give such briefings just before the annual report. It was a two-hour briefing, one and a half hours was given by myself."
Among others, the discussions revolved around assessment, policies and how Malaysia could build its resilience for the future and not just for now, Zeti said.
Asked by reporters about investigations into 1Malaysia Development Bhd, she declined to comment as the matter was still under probe.
Zeti has been governor since May 2000 and will punch out for the final time next month. – March 11, 2016.
