Umno information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said those involved in initiating the declaration were aware that the democracy practised in the country was based on elections and governed by a constitution.

"Maybe some people got excited to join the declaration, to sign it, but deep down they knew that it was not the way," he told reporters after visiting Bernama.

Last Friday, former prime minister and Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad led about 50 individuals in signing the declaration to support the move to oust Datuk Seri Najib Razak as prime minister.

Also supporting the declaration were former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, former Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, Selangor Menteri Besar and PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik.

"They called it the Citizens' Declaration, but it was actually from a group of leaders who are holding grudges and not even from those who are representing the people.

"This is a sentiment of sedition which came from those who are disappointed of his own failed agenda," Annuar said.

Annuar, who is Ketereh MP, also said Umno would remain positive in tackling all issues, and that the declaration issue would make Umno a stronger party.

"There is no political party in the world that is not facing any problems or issues. Each issue is a process to test our political antibody. The more we are tested, the more experience we will gain," he said. – Bernama, March 10, 2016.
