Singapore lands its side of undersea cable to boost Internet

The SEA-ME-WE 5 cable system is being developed by a consortium comprising 17 global players, including Telekom Malaysia.
On the Malaysian side, Telekom Malaysia landed the SEA-ME-WE 5 submarine cable in Malacca in January this year.
Illustrating the cable's capacity, Singtel reportedly said "it can allow 4,800 high-definition movies to be downloaded per second".
Progress on landing down the 20,000km cable seems on track for completion by year-end.
The telco said the cable is expected to meet the quadrupling of bandwidth demand between Europe and Asia from 2016 to 2021.
The cable system will deliver 24 Terabits per second of capacity using 100 gigabits per second fibre optic transmission technology.
Construction of the SEA-ME-WE 5, which will link 17 countries from France to Indonesia, began in September 2014, it said. – Bernama, March 11, 2016.
