Six new episodes will see star duo Fox Mulder and Dana Scully return to the small screen, investigating more conspiracy theories, occult occurrences and alien encounters.

Fans may never have dreamed of seeing a 10th season of "The X-Files" but, after 14 years of silence, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are stepping back into service as FBI special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, investigating paranormal goings-on in six new episodes.

The truth is out there

The world and the USA have changed a lot since the original series ended on Fox in 2002. In this age of instant information and perpetual tracking and surveillance, today's constantly connected citizens have adapted to a new way of life in the post-9/11 era.

These themes proved a great inspiration to series creator Chris Carter when developing plots for the new episodes.

In many ways, the show's famous mantra– "the truth is out there" – seems more relevant now than ever. Government lies and cover-ups will again bring rich undercurrents to the plot.

However, the show's alien investigations haven't been side lined, much to the delight of Fox Mulder, who's still haunted by the abduction of his sister by aliens when he was a child.

Mixed feelings about season 10

Fans of the original have been mostly excited about the return of "The X-Files" ever since the new season was announced in March 2015. However, the press – particularly the American media – seems less enthusiastic about bringing back such a legend of the small screen, which received 16 Emmy Awards and five Golden Globes after running for nine years.

Heavyweights like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety don't think Fox should risk spoiling the magic of the original series with a 2016 add-on.

Still, the network has done everything it can to recreate its winning formula, using the same actors as the 1990s series, and keeping the same opening credits and haunting synth notes of Mark Snow's theme tune. – AFP/Relaxnews, January 20, 2016.
