‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ now fourth biggest movie of all time
Taking US$1.54 billion (RM6.78 billion) at the box office since its release on December 18, the seventh episode in the "Star Wars" story has overtaken "Furious 7" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" to become the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time.
As of this week, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is shaking things up in the rankings for all-time global box-office hits. The J.J. Abrams film is still playing in movie theatres, but has already grossed more than the seventh "Fast and Furious" movie, "Furious 7" (US$1.51 billion), and the follow-up to "The Avengers", "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (US$1.52 billion), both of which were also released in 2015.
Another of last year's huge hits, "Jurassic World", is still hanging on to its spot at number three, grossing US$1.67 billion, even if Finn and Rey – the new star characters of the latest "Star Wars" – aren't far behind.
However, "The Force Awakens" is still some way behind record-holders "Titanic" and "Avatar", which remain the world's two highest ever grossing movies, taking US$2.1 billion and US$2.78 billion respectively.
In the US, "The Force Awakens" has edged past James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster. With box-office takings at US$750.2 million, "Star Wars" is now the highest-grossing movie of all time in the US, ahead of "Avatar" with US$749.8 million.
In spite of the film's huge success in the UK (US$146.9 million), the return of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia is yet to match "Skyfall", which remains the UK's highest-grossing movie of all time at US$161 million.
"The Force Awakens" has also proved a hit in Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Spain, Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Russia and Brazil. It's slated for release in China on January 9. – AFP/Relaxnews, January 6, 2016.
