Disastrous outing for Malaysian shooters at ISSF World Cup
The national shooting squad had a disastrous outing at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Bangkok, after none of them qualified for the final round let alone grab a podium finish.
In the men's 50m rifle three positions event today, Mohd Hadafi Jaafar emerged as the best Malaysian shooter after gunning down 1,136 points to finish in 35th place out of 41 shooters in the qualifying round of the meet which serves as the last platform for the competing shooters to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Two other Malaysian shooters – Mohamad Lutfi Othman and Mohammad Zubair Muhammad – finished in 37th and 39 place respectively after amassing 1,131 and 1,121 points, according to ISSF website;www.issf-sports.org.
Only the top eight shooters in the qualifying round advanced to the final.
United States shooter, Matthew Emmons gunned down the gold medal after accumulating 458.6 points, followed by Serhiy Kulish of Ukraine with silver (456.8 points) while China's shooter, Cao Yifei claimed the bronze medal with 445.6 points.
The results saw Jonathan Wong as the only Malaysian shooter to qualify for Rio after striking the gold medal in the men's 10m Air Pistol Individual at the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament in India, last month.
A total of 333 athletes, representing 49 countries from five continents, competing in the eight-day meet which started since March 1. – Bernama, March 8, 2016.
