Hewitt to play doubles in Davis Cup tie
Lleyton Hewitt will become the first playing captain for Australia since Norman Brookes in 1919. – Reuters pic, March 5, 2016.Captain Lleyton Hewitt will break his short-lived retirement to play doubles for Australia in the Davis Cup World Group tie in Melbourne, Tennis Australia said on Saturday.
Hewitt, who announced he would be retiring after losing in the second round at the Australian Open in January, will partner John Peers against Bob and Mike Bryan in Saturday's pivotal doubles rubber at Kooyong.
The tie is level at 1-1 after Australia and the United States shared Friday's opening singles rubbers.
The 35-year-old warhorse will become the first playing captain for Australia since Norman Brookes in 1919.
Hewitt decided to replace his nominated selection Sam Groth in the doubles after Groth lost in straight sets to American John Isner on Friday.
Hewitt has previously played in a record 41 Davis Cup ties for his country, with a 58/20 win-loss record in singles and doubles. – AFP, March 5, 2016.
