The record came a day after Kawasaki Frontale forward Yoshito Okubo tied Sato and former Japan international Masashi Nakayama on 157 goals.
Sato's effort was a scruffy one, credited to him after a shot from Kosei Shibasaki deflected off the 33-year-old and into the net.
"It wasn't very pretty but I guess it's typical of the type of goals I score," said Sato, who has helped champions Hiroshima win three J-League titles in the past four years.
Elsewhere, former Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd fired a late winner as promoted Jubilo Iwata upset Urawa Reds 2-1 away in front of a 44,000-strong crowd in Saitama north of Tokyo.
Gamba Osaka, domestic treble winners two seasons ago, scraped a 1-0 win at Ventforet Kofu for their first win of the fledgling campaign. FC Tokyo won 2-1 away to northern Japanese side Vegalta Sendai.
Last season's second division champions Omiya Ardija head the table after two games with a perfect six points following their 2-0 home win over Kashiwa Reysol yesterday. – AFP, March 6, 2016.
