Amazon ends pay-per-click advertising programme

Amazon.com has quietly closed a pay-per-click programme that diverted traffic away from the platform to retailers' own websites.

Up until Tuesday, August 11, businesses could buy targeted advertising space on Amazon.com that, if clicked on, redirected visitors away from the site, driving them towards external retailers and manufacturers (also known as "product ads").

Now, Amazon has discreetly closed its programme, which could be damaging to small retailers that rely on advertising space but do not sell through the platform.

According to an email from Amazon sent to The Wall Street Journal, the move to discontinue the service permanently will take place on October 31.

A specific reason for this development was not given, although it has been suggested that it has something to do with reducing the power of Google on Amazon.com. – AFP/Relaxnews, August 13, 2015.
