For art-lovers with only a few days to spare, we recommend a few events and venues to see in Singapore in the coming months.

"In the Eye of the Red Dot"

The sculptor Yeo Chee Kiong has been commissioned by City Developments Limited and the National Museum of Singapore to create a sculpture commemorating Singapore's 50th anniversary of independence. From mid-September, his work – chosen from among 48 submissions, with the theme "The Red Dot, Today and Tomorrow" – will be displayed outside the National Museum of Singapore. Look for it on the lawn at the Fort Canning entrance.

Within the museum, galleries are being revamped with new content on Singapore's post-independence history.

Gillman Barracks

This contemporary art cluster is home to a dozen international galleries and the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art. Current shows include "Out of Myth, Onto_Logical" featuring Malaysian conceptual artist Po Po, through September 13 at the Yavuz Gallery; the first solo exhibit in South East Asia for Sydney-based artist Khadim Ali (Arnt, through September 6); and "Fish Story, to be continued" by Allan Sekula, a look at the global maritime industry (NTU CCA Singapore, through September 27).

"After Utopia"

Through October 18, the Singapore Art Museum is "revising the ideal in Asian contemporary art" in an exhibition that draws mainly from its own collection. "Other Edens" explores the image of the garden as a symbol for paradise; "The City and its Discontents" brings in contemporary structures and environments; "Legacies Left" looks at ideologies on which societies have been built; and "The Way Within" goes to the realm of the self and psyche.

If you miss these exhibitions, rest assured there is a consolation prize. Later in the season Singapore is opening its brand-new institution in the former Supreme Court and City Hall buildings in the Civic District, setting out to offer one of the largest collections of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Opening celebrations begin November 24, with free entry through December 6. – AFP, August 14, 2015.
