Itek Sio and gula melaka ice cream for your next SQ flight
The next time you find yourself on a Singapore Airlines flight, you can tuck into itek sio or Nyonya Nasi Padang. They are part of the airline’s SG50 menu offerings called Singapore Heritage Cuisine, which was launched today at the SATS In-flight Catering Centre 1.
The idea was first mooted before Christmas last year, when Singapore Airlines was brainstorming for SG50 initiatives. For this project, the airline tapped on Shermay Lee, local chef and author of The New Mrs Lee’s Cookbook: Nyonya Recipes, to create dishes for passengers.
Singapore Airlines senior vice president product and services Tan Pee Teck said: “Singapore Heritage Cuisine features familiar dishes that many Singaporeans grew up enjoying at home. We are delighted to be offering this ‘home away from home’ gastronomic experience to our customers from around the world.”
Suites and First Class passengers will get to indulge in dishes such as bawan kepiting and pork ribs soup as well as itek tim. Lee’s ayam buah keluack, Nyonya Nasi Padang and Hokkien prawn noodles soup and pork satay will also be offered as main cofor passengers urses to passengers in Suites, First Class and Business Class. Meanwhile Premium Economy Class and Economy Class customers will enjoy offerings such as Nyonya Fish Curry and Ayam Tempra. Even desserts are not overlooked — the airline will serve ice cream wafers in four nostalgic flavours, namely, bandung, gula Melaka, pandan and sweet corn.
“It’s an important opportunity for Singaporean food. And I’m honoured and privileged to bring Singapore food abroad,” Shermay said.
The Singapore Heritage Cuisine will be offered on most SQ flights departing from Singapore from July 1 to September 30. During this period, SQ passengers can also get free admission to the Peranakan Museum in Singapore by presenting their Singapore Airlines boarding passes. Tan said the offerings may be extended beyond that period if there is popular demand. – TODAY Online, June 25, 2015.
