New Year celebrations in Sydney
Not many days from now, the planet will bid farewell to 2015 and welcome 2016 with open arms.
We are taking a world tour of the big cities where the New Year is a major cause for celebration. Let's take a look at what is planned in Sydney, Australia.
The Australian megalopolis is the first to celebrate 2016. Every year, the show takes place in Sydney Harbour, above Harbour Bridge and opposite the Opera.
The countdown is witnessed by over a million people. The entertainment begins at 6pm, with an aerial display followed by pylon projections on Harbor Bridge.
The bay is full of boats lit up for the occasion. And the fantastic 12-minute firework display starts at midnight.
The place to be: because of the geographical location of the event, visitors have a good choice of vantage points, including Macquarie Point and other spots in the Royal Botanic Garden. Darling Point and Point Piper are other alternatives.
Some people prefer to get further back to enjoy the whole view. If that is your strategy, Watson Bay is a good spot. The official website lists all the possible vantage points.
Practical tips: Some bus routes will change because of the large number of people. Sydney increases its public transport capacity to ensure the celebrations run smoothly.
The ferries at Circular Quay will run until 8pm and some of their routes change from 5.39pm.
Safety precautions: Driving in Sydney will be difficult. Many roads will be closed to traffic.
Take in the show at home: This is such a big event that it is even broadcast on Australian radio (104.1 2Day FM).
The ABC TV channel's broadcast starts at 8.30pm, and the celebrations will be streaming live. – AFP Relaxnews, December 19, 2015.
