Tokyo took over Melbourne's top spot with an average hotel room rate of RM808 a night, recording a 30.3% rise from the previous year, according to the HRS Annual Asia Pacific Hotel Price Radar for 2015.

Sydney recorded an average room rate of RM800, while Singapore came in at a close RM787, the report said.

The annual report tracks the average hotel rate based on online bookings through the HRS booking site.

Melbourne, which came in fourth place, recorded an average cost of RM697 a night, a 19.6% drop from the previous year.

The report also noted that despite terrorist scares and environmental crises, business travel remains largely unaffected.

“The rise in business-related travel drive hotel rooms demand, and cities with the top hotel room rates indicates the business hotspots within the APAC region,” HRS managing director Todd Arthur said in a statement.

“Hotel room rates increases are driven by higher levels of business confidence.”

While the Bangkok bombings might have shaken the city, room rates in Thailand's capital recorded a whopping 31% increase from 2014.

Beijing also saw an increase of 22.2% in spite of the issuing of the first red-alert during their smog crises late last year.

Sydney, Bengaluru and Kuala Lumpur recorded stable hotel room rates with a less than 10% change from the year before. – February 25, 2016.
