Makmur is one of those traditional cookies that's always available in most households, particularly in Johor. Originally from the Middle East, this cookie has become a delicious favourite here in Malaysia.

Ingredients:
2¼ cups of plain flour, sifted
½ cup melted ghee
1 egg, beaten
½ cups deseeded dates, mashed
3 tbsp sesame seeds, roasted
Icing sugar
Method:
1. Put the flour in a large bowl.
2. Pour in the melted ghee and egg and incorporate it into the flour to form a dough.
3. Roll the mashed dates into tiny balls. Coat the date balls with the sesame seeds.
4. Take a small bag of dough and flatten it.
5. Place the date ball onto the flattened dough.
6. Cover the date with the dough and shape the dough into ovals, replicating the shapes of dates. If desired, use a pastry clip to make leaf designs for each cookie. Repeat until dough is used up.
7. Place the cookies on a greased cookie tray about 1½ inches apart.
8. Bake for 20 minutes in an oven preheated to 180°C.
9. When done, remove the cookies from the oven and sprinkle icing sugar on them.
