Garmin’s new smart glasses focus on making a splash

The Garmin Nautix (pic) is a hands-free display developed especially for those that love taking to the high seas.

Rather than coming as a complete headset, the Nautix can be fitted to the wearer's normal sunglasses so that he or she can get situation-critical information directly within their line of sight but without distraction.

"Boaters can now have a continuous view of critical boat data at all times, which is beneficial in a number of on-the-water situations, including when you're looking for fish and want to see a change in water temperature or depth, if you're a sailor to start a race and need to see the countdown timer or if you have to hand over the helm to someone else for any reason, like to drop anchor," said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice-president of worldwide sales.

The device weighs just 29.7g, is water proof and can be operated with a gloved or wet hand. The battery is good for eight hours' use and the display is compatible with a number of chart-plotters for receiving up to 12 different screens of relevant data.

The Nautix will retail for US$399.99 (RM1,700) when it goes on sale in April. – AFP/Relaxnews, February 11, 2016.
