The LikeSo app wants to help people stop using filler words such as "like", "so" and "whatever" in order to improve articulation and boost confidence.
Say It Media, the company behind the iOS app, pitches it as a "personal speech coach" that will help to eradicate what it sees as the unnecessary filler words that are rapidly permeating the English language.
"There is a verbal epidemic that is raging through our American population and we are launching a mission to do something about it," said Say It Media, Inc founder Audrey Mann Cronin.
"We all want to speak in a way that compels others to listen. But when we insert too many 'likes' and 'ya knows', we lessen our credibility and invite unnecessary judgment."
The app aims to reverse the trend by helping people analyse their current speech patterns for overuse of pause words, filler phrases and excessive speed.
Once a filler-word count has been established, it will let users play spoken word games to improve their scores and reverse existing habits.
The point of the app is to make the verbal workout fun and to highlight the fact that even the best and most confident communicators have to work for their success.
LikeSo is available to download from the App Store for 99 cents (RM4.08). – AFP/Relaxnews, March 9, 2016.
